Countries and Regions

The Global Platform for Urban Climate Neutrality sustains a platform for knowledge sharing among cities and other relevant stakeholders, technical solution providers, and financing institutions. It focuses on developing countries and emerging economies, continuing the work developed in previous periods.

Knowledge Hubs engage stakeholders in energy efficiency initiatives through knowledge sharing and outreach. The hubs provide users with access to selected information, reports, publications, and databases on energy efficiency. They serve as a one-stop shop for energy efficiency, linked to many other related initiatives.

China

China is accelerating energy transition under its “Dual Carbon” targets—peaking CO₂ emissions before 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060—while the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) to drive deeper structural decarbonization and a high-efficiency, renewables-led energy system. UNEP CCC supports these ambitions through long-standing bilateral cooperation, including the Sino-Danish energy partnership with Danish Energy Agency(DEA) and Sino-German energy collaboration with Germany Energy Agency(dena).

India

India’s tropical climate and increasing extreme weather events are expected to drive up the usage of electric fans and air conditioners in the coming years. Unfortunately, India has the world’s lowest access to cooling, with less than 5% air conditioner penetration.

Most of the over 3000 secondary boarding schools in Kenya are using inefficient incandescenet bulbs for lighting; lighting often contributes over half of the schools electricity bills. The poor lighting also affects the school children’s health and education.

Vietnam’s rapid urbanization and economic growth are significantly increasing cooling demand in cities, leading to a surge in power consumption and refrigerant use. This trend is projected to raise emissions from cooling from 34 MTCO2.eq in 2017 to 81 MTCO2.eq by 2030.

Mauritius

The UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre has been engaged in providing support to Mauritius through a variety of initiatives. Through the GEF funded Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions for Low Carbon Island Development Strategy project in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, the project sleeked to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
