The Climate Policy Initiative explores the alignment of the building sector with carbon reduction pathways and outlines several recommendations to address the energy efficiency of the building stock, including:
- Standardized reporting on energy efficiency investments and the energy performance of buildings
- Continuous monitoring of assets against environmental performance metrics, benchmarks and net-zero climate scenarios
- Large scale retrofitting in developed economies with certification systems aligned to retrofitted buildings
- Certification of new construction in developing economies to leverage massive low-carbon investment opportunity
Europe, North America and Asia account for 95% of the total certified floor area and 97% of financial flows across residential, commercial and industrial sectors. The Climate Policy Initiative indicates they represented €4.3bn, €2.65 and €2.29 of financial flows in green-certified buildings in 2020, respectively.
