World’s Best MEPS: Tracking Leaders in Appliance Energy Efficiency Standards

The World’s Best MEPS Toolkit by CLASP is a comprehensive benchmarking tool designed to evaluate and compare the stringency of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for six high-impact appliance categories: lighting, air conditioners, refrigerators, electric motors, water heaters, and space heating equipment. It assesses MEPS across ten of the world’s highest carbon-emitting economies—such as the U.S., China, the EU, and India—against international best practices and targets like those from the United for Efficiency (U4E) initiative. The toolkit identifies which economies are leading, lagging, or approaching optimal efficiency thresholds, offering a clear picture of global progress toward energy-efficient appliances

This tool is particularly valuable for policymakers, researchers, and advocates aiming to align national standards with global climate goals. It not only highlights where improvements are needed but also encourages the adoption of technology-neutral, ambitious MEPS that can drive significant reductions in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The toolkit supports integration of these standards into national climate strategies, such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and provides a foundation for informed policy development and international collaboration
