The Net Zero Appliances NDC Toolkit, developed by CLASP, is a comprehensive resource designed to help governments integrate appliance energy efficiency into their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Recognising that appliances and equipment account for nearly 40% of global energy-related CO₂ emissions, the toolkit emphasises the critical role of efficient appliances in achieving climate goals. It provides actionable guidance for policymakers, including how to assess national appliance sectors, model energy savings, and draft effective NDC language. The toolkit also includes country-specific fact sheets and examples to illustrate how appliance efficiency can be incorporated into climate strategies, aligning with global pledges such as the UAE Consensus and the Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge.
By targeting ten key appliances—such as air conditioners, lighting, refrigerators, and electric motors—the toolkit outlines how countries can avoid up to 9.2 gigatons of CO₂ emissions by 2050 and save $1.5 trillion in utility bills globally. It highlights the wide-ranging benefits of appliance efficiency, including reduced fossil fuel demand, improved grid resilience, enhanced public health, and progress toward 12 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The toolkit is especially timely as countries prepare to revise their NDCs for submission in 2025, offering a strategic opportunity to embed appliance efficiency into national climate agendas and accelerate progress toward net-zero emissions.
