Major opportunities are available to increase the fuel efficiency of heavy-duty vehicles beyond the technologies needed to meet the standards in place for model years 2014 to 2018. We evaluate fuel-saving technologies now available or under development for three major classes of heavy-duty vehicles: tractor trucks; vocational vehicles; and heavy-duty pickups and vans. We find that adoption of these technologies could reduce new heavy-duty vehicles’ fuel consumption by 26% and yield oil savings of more than 800,000 barrels of oil per day in 2035 beyond the benefits accrued by the standards already in place.
